Today my Dad turns 60, and I love him.
I am very fortunate to have him, and most importantly to know him. And that is certainly his greatest gift to me – being able to let me know him in all his shades and complications.
He is hilarious, and witty, intelligent, silly, indulgent of others, endlessly curious, an adventurer, vulnerable, patriotic, brave, and the most optimistic pessimist I know – because, despite (what I perceive) to be his belief that the great majority of people are not as good as they could be, he still jumps in. He has a weak ankle, and has done mountain walks that most people wouldn’t dare. He scuba dives. He is brave enough to love and love.
I am very proud of my Dad, and grateful that he is proud of me – and tells me so.
As kids he would have us rolling around on the floor laughing so hard we thought we would burst. doing magnificently silly dances with bottom out at silly angles,or Donald duck impersonations which were at once terrifying and great. He took us on camping trips and explorations, and makes marvellous creations in wood (more than a few are the first things after my children I would rescue in case of a fire). He gave me a love of words, both reading and writing, and tells a fantastic story.
He is a man of many, many talents and is inspirational to me.
Happy Birthday Dad – you are an truly exceptional human being, and I am so lucky to have you in my life. 🙂
