Burlesque Boa – Oil + wax on canvas panel. 21cm x 15cm
Remember how I said I was not so busy? Well it is and isn’t true…. I have a small show booked at Hudson on Carlisle Street for November this year – which is creeping up quite quickly actually.
When I spoke to Nikki, the work I showed her was mostly from my Paper Dolls series. Because it’s a retail + art space, it’s important to keep the cost down for work to be saleable (and I need to sell), and the Paper Dolls are just too labour intensive and big to be able to do that, so I’ve been turning it over and over in my head trying to figure out what kind of series to paint that will fit into a funky little shop like that without being too lowbrow and selling out (because I’m quite the wanker if you hadn’t noticed).
I have 2 ideas that would be in small canvases and framed (like the work above) and would love some feedback:
Dirty postcards – burlesque poses from Dr Sketchy
City snapshot – portraits of fictional people, animals, birds – some with text or captions as part of the paintings
Very confused. I like one idea, I think the other could be great too. Perhaps I should do both and have burlesque ladies as part of the city. See my problem? Would you put a burlesque lady on your wall or would you worry it would corrupt the kids?
