Reflection. Oil + wax on Linen, 2007. 92xm x 92cm.
A new work from me – Reflection. This was one of those paintings that was ambitious for me. I struggle with trees and I struggle with landscapes. Lately however, I find I am drawn more to images that have people in nature, and I have been trying on an off for the past year to paint the odd picture where someone is in nature, breathing deep, experiencing the smells and vibrations of the world around them.
I’m quite excited by this work, and wonder where it will take me. It started off well, turned, bad, turned good. There was quite a bit of frustration and a bit of fear involved. I handled the ocean in a dynamic and quite textured way, and the tree has lots of scratching drawn into it. This scratching is becoming quite a big part of the way I work lately, and I feel quite a lot of ownership about it with regards to my work.
It’s been quite a good week for painting, and I’m rolling along quite easily at the moment with a few false starts – which always mean I’m making another little jump forward. Another work is progressing nicely – in the Anthropomorphie series. Hopefully I’ll be able to post that in the next week.
This afternoon it’s off to Brighton to hang that little show, then it’s in the lap of the gods.
Weirdly – in the last 24 hours the words ‘happy days’ keep popping out at me. 2 comments on here yesterday, a couple of times on the TV, on an art forum I visit, once on the radio, a parent this morning. Spooky. I’m starting to believe it.
Happy days. 🙂
