Me – today, still to have a shower….. I hate that – dropping my son off at school in a rush, and coming back feeling all grubby. That’s one of the things that will have to change in the near future I think. A shower every second day would save water – but it feels horrible…..
I may be the last person in my acquaintance to have realised it – but it all of a sudden hit me last week that we are in serious trouble on this planet as a species unless quite a lot of what we do changes – and fast. 20 years ago I remember seeing a spate of documentaries about climate change and global warming, and how if we didn’t do something about it soon – we would be paying for it within our lifetime. Companies put out ‘recycled’ everything, there were ranges of CFC free products, and we got into the habit of separating our waste. Now – with the exception of separating our waste, we pretty much do things the same way we always did.
Plus there are more of us.
And, (and this really freaks me out) almost everything we wear, touch or use has been made in China – where, I am sure they are not doing the environmentally conscious thing. We have come to expect that jeans for our kids will cost not more than $30 – and that means they will have been made for 60 cents by some worker in a dingy factory, far from their home, sleeping in a dormitory, and struggling to send money home. We are the ones that make that possible, and I see no solution to that. For the most part, jeans that cost $200 are still made in a factory in China – we just pay more for them. I wonder how they handle their waste, when they handle their workers so poorly. I wonder what that is doing to the planet, while we sit here, feeling good about using recycled toilet paper. It’s still our problem. It’s all of our problem, and it’s getting more noticeable. We still have a drought, it’s nearly winter and our trees still have all their leaves – they are only starting to turn yellow in the last few days. We had the warmest night on record for May since 1943 this week (summer temperatures).
My Dad sent me this as well.
Something is definately skewy, and it’s starting to worry me rather a lot……..

great pic! very andy warhole!
You are so right – In relation to clothing – I vowed not long ago to not buy clothing made in China etc… It may cost a lot more otherwise – though you’re guaranteed the quality will be much better – though the main reason is the quality of business practices from the clothing companies – as paying a bit more for clothing is much better than supporting child slave labor! And yes, the world is going down the toilet – I find it incredibly stupid that most put the all mighty dollar before their planet. It’s ridiculous. Money is just a man made concept, nothing more.
hahaha – end of rant:)
It is very scary, and hopefully the increasing awareness is seeing more of us trying to do our bit. I like to think that it is not too late and am always on the lookout for new ways I can make a difference. My husband disconnected our toilet a few months back, so we cannot flush it. Instead we all shower over a baby bath and then bucket the water from this into the toilet. The difference to our water bill this quarter was so astounding – it is rather alarming to think about how much clean water could be saved if others did this too.
As to the use of power, my husband did a great activity with his grade 6 class recently. Families who were ok with sharing their electricity bill info sent them in and the kids plotted all sorts of stuff on graphs, like family size, power usage, power costs and the use of energy saving devices. The conclusion – energy saving devices are well worth it, many times over, both for the planet and in terms of costs to families.
love the photo! and i am so with you on the environmental thing… i am wondering when the governments of our country and state are going to realise this is actually reaching acritical point?! and we can actually do something now before it is dire?! hmmm.
on that note, i am changing my business name over to ‘eco edge architecture & interior design’ as this is something i feel so strongly about and something that i want to be involved in professionally.
now, if only i could afford some lovely photo voltaics for my roof…
